While Harvey is a close neighbor of New Orleans, it has a culture and appeal all its own. Its history goes back to the early 18th century. Jean-Baptiste d’Estrehan de Beaupré was the first landowner in Harvey, during the French colonial era in Louisiana. He was treasurer and comptroller, assigned by the beloved French king, Louis XV. D’Estrehan de Beaupré oversaw the construction of the Harvey Canal, which connected the Mississippi to the Bayou Barataria, and thus to the Gulf of Mexico.
The town he established as “Cosmopolite City” was later renamed “Harvey” after his great-granddaughter’s husband, Joseph Hale Harvey, who developed a company town at that site. However, the d’Estrehan de Beaupré name lives on in both Destrehan Avenue in Harvey, and the nearby town of Destrehan.
Throughout its history, Harvey has had brushes with fame. Antoine “Fats” Domino, a rock ‘n’ roll luminary, spent his golden years in Harvey. Before he played for the Pistons, the Celtics, and the Raptors, basketball great Greg Monroe was honing his moves on the court at Harvey’s Helen Cox High School.
Home to a bustling marine and metal fabrication industry, the Harvey Canal is still the lifeblood of the town. But the Canal isn’t just about work; south of all the manufacturing, good times abound at the Boomtown Casino. Try your luck at poker, slots, and table games, or just dance the night away at Boomers Live and Loaded.
When the weekend comes, dive into a smorgasbord of South and Central American cuisine, as you browse for all manner of interesting trinkets and gewgaws at the Westbank Flea Market on Scotsdale Drive. For more serious shopping, take Manhattan Boulevard to Fountain Park Center, where you’ll find 20 acres of shops and dining ensconced by palmettos, ponds, and fountains.
