Kenner, Louisiana has a rich cultural diversity and a fascinating history. The French, who settled the area in the early 18th century, called it Cannes-Brûlées, or “Burned Canes,” because the natives in the swampland burned cane reeds to help them hunt small game. Prominent early landowners included naval commander Jean Baptiste Martin d’Artaguiette and Joseph Montesquiou, whose noble ancestor inspired the character of d’Artagnan in Alexandre Dumas’ most famous work.
Despite its French foundations, the town was named after Minor Kenner, son of 19th century merchant William Kenner. In 1855, when nearby New Orleans was connected by rail to Jackson, Mississippi, Minor Kenner decided to transform the Oakland and Belle Grove plantations into a city. About a hundred years later, land developers began draining and drying swampland to create housing developments. Interstate 10 came along in the 1960s, further fueling Kenner’s growth spurt.
Modern Kenner offers its residents and visitors many attractions and conveniences, such as shopping at the Esplanade Mall in East Jefferson, boating and biking at the piers and bike paths in Laketown, gambling at the Treasure Chest riverboat casino on Lake Pontchartrain, and stargazing at the Kenner Planetarium in Rivertown.
