Metairie is steeped in history. Before the arrival of the French in the early 18th century, the area was called Tchoupitoulas and was home to the Acolapissa tribe. The city’s current name comes from the French word métairie, which is a tenant farm in the sharecropping (métayage) system. Indeed, many of Metairie’s first residents were tenant farmers and sharecroppers.
Over time, as the economy changed, the landscape of the city changed. The invention of the Wood Pump allowed large tracts of swampland outside of Old Metairie to be drained and converted into housing developments in the 1940s.
Today, Metairie is the largest community in Jefferson Parish. It’s a great town for sports enthusiasts: Have a ball at Lafreniere Park, where you can play lacrosse, baseball, frisbee golf, and more in 155 acres of green space. Catch some Minor League action at the Shrine on Airline or watch the Saints and Pelicans in training at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center.
Metairie is also a party town: Family Gras, an annual Mardi Gras celebration for people of all ages, features concerts with top talent like The Monkees, Cyndi Lauper, and The Beach Boys. Savor all the seafood you can eat, plus entertainment from local musicians, each year at the Bucktown Seafood Fest. Feel lucky and get your Green on at the Metairie Road St. Patrick’s Day Parade, a Metairie tradition since 1971.
